Simple Homemade DE Toothpaste
To avoid fluoride, Shae and I have been using homemade clay toothpaste for the past year. We have tried different combinations of ingredients & recipes. By changing the main ingredient, clay, to DE (diatomaceous earth), we found a recipe we enjoy and wanted to share.
Watch:
Ingredients
1/2 Cup Food Grade DE (Diatomaceous Earth)
1/2 Cup Water
1/4 Teaspoon Salt
1/4 Teaspoon Stevia Extract
12 drops of Peppermint Extract
2 drops of Tea Tree Oil
Directions
1. Pour some of the water into a small bowl
2. Using a fork, mix in Salt, Stevia, Peppermint Oil and Tea Tree Oil
3. After salt has dissolved, add DE
4. Gradually add in water until it is the consistency of toothpaste (may need more/less water than 1/2 cup)
Additional Comments
We can change this recipe in various ways to our liking. One fourth teaspoon of stevia may be a bit much, we could use less. Shae and I are not crazy about the strong flavor & smell of Tea Tree oil but we like it's anti-bacterial, anti-fungal attributes so we add in a small amount. The peppermint flavor could be changed to any essential oil.
The best part of this recipe is that it is fluoride free, chemical & additive free, and totally organic (depending on the ingredients added).
Bottle It
If we put it in a ketchup bottle, we can shake it up and squeeze it out onto our toothbrush. The benefit is we don’t have to dip our toothbrush into a dish. This can be quite disconcerting when more than one person is using it :) This is surprisingly the biggest reason for not using homemade toothpaste. I'm sure there are several other squeeze bottles that would work as well. i.e. One that is see-through would be nice or we have even considered using a large syringe.
Results
The first thing we noticed is how smooth our teeth feel. After a month of using the toothpaste, my teeth became less sensitive and pain free. Shae’s teeth are strong and beautiful. She has never had a cavity. (However, she has been drinking raw goat’s milk for over 12 years :)
