Roofing Complete & Shower Wall Start
Time for roofing! We get the shingles installed but have a little setback with the installation of the skylights. Gary also begins the design of the shower walls - thanks to all the comments indicating we need the walls to keep the water from splashing all over the bathroom floor. What would we do without you :) Have a super week! We'll see ya next Friday :)

Video Transcript
last week we installed gutters on the
kitchen roof and laid the piping for our
rain harvesting system
stay tuned as we
continue on the kitchen and bathroom
additions to the main house

we don't get
a lot of rain here in the desert so
normally you put the gutters on after the
roofing material has been put on
we're in the rainy season right now so
in this case, rain was coming real
quick-like so we went ahead and put our
gutters up first
put up our rain drip
flashing on
?
I just pulled out a llama in my back pocket
everyone has back pockey llama
back pocket llama
but you have to say it in this accent
whatever this accent is
somewhere between French and something else
that's a good one

ooohhhh, did you get your finger?

got to go fix your boo boo
and you tell me to be cautious
don't want you bleeding on my roof
alright I'll go take care of wound

the metal work and then he's laying it
flat and measuring

the plan is to throw some tar paper down
I do need to get the curbs on first for
the skylights

when putting in the
skylights, I first work with this
whole frame idea and once I have the
frames built
cut out the holes and so
that they'll fit right inside the holes
yeah we should put some more nails around it
not quite enough
oh it comes up like that
Oh I thought it was going to drop in
they're all size down just a little bit
smaller than the skylight themselves so
the skyline can fit over the top of them
once I have them all secured and nailed
down then I'm ready for the next step

other than thumb almost falling off, no drama

so we decided
to go with shingles for the roof mostly
because we wanted to match the same as
this
we're just popping a few of them
out so that we can flip our paper
this one underneath this ledge here

we put that roof on yesterday

I feel like I'm in a boat
I feel like I'm coming out of a porthole
plus this roof
that's on this one is already
it's got another ten years on
it or so
now we staple it down
plus it'll make the seam here a lot
easier to do
okay guys listen to me real

I don't want anybody hurt
right where that is setting there

so no marathon's on the roof
no jumping and dancing

I guess I'll call and tell the rental company we don't want that boom box
later on when we go to replace this
roof we're gonna replace the whole thing
with metal
mostly because it's good for
rain catchment and we just got that
beautiful rain catchment system
installed but first just kind of a get
me by, we're gonna use the shingles
normally for a the roof that you use the
shingles for
typical little asphalt
shingles
you would just put a 2x4 curb
to put skylights on
in this case I
use two by six because in the future I
want to be able to take that roof off
and put metal roofing on which
requires a deeper curb
I found a potential problem with my
thumb but it's been overlooked now
it
does work
well those band-aids aren't so bad
they were technologically ahead of
their time
apparently
I'm okay with it now
I was a
little worried that won't work with my
phone and then I contemplated
taking it off so I could use my finger
I understand
priorities
yeah

for the first one here make a quick
little mark down that

and the reason we do this is because the next
one that goes on, goes over the top of it
so that we cover this area

pretty much the same as those gaps
this goes to the bottom of this and that
little section there tells you where
that starts and stops

we're creating now the little walls are
going inside of the shower
I'm using
this composite wood - synthetic -
and they're gonna hold up really
well with water and that kind of a deal so
I thought I'd use those and then I'll be
using these metal frame on the inside
we requested some ideas on how to put
the walls in on this shower idea and you
responded
lots of comments on how to do
these walls and I've kind of taken some
combination of different ideas and
thoughts and I'm putting it to use

somebody wanted to know how we handle
conflict resolution in our family
my
best friend she was telling her brother
all about how we fight and I thought it
was funny because I've never seen
anybody excitedly tell someone else
about how a family fights
it's actually
through humor
so jokes, sarcasm

we really wanted you to

we were concerned
that you wouldn't have a good day so we
thought we'd just go ahead and get the

really jokes and then the other person
knows that you were upset so then they
joke back
is that so
well, I appreciate that
very accomidating of you
all I got to say is...
if anybody has any problems,
like anything at all even if it's small
we always just talk about it
we're very
open about -
I have a whole set of things
oh my gosh
small stuff can turn
into big stuff so we find that if we're
just open and honest about things, it stops
the issues before they start happening
but joking big time
big jokers
Our fights are usually just one big joke
we do have big blow ups that do happen but
they're very rare and they do end up
resolving themselves
well not always
I don't know for the
future ones but so far so good
we just scream on each other,
cool off, come back and we're good

here's where we have another instance of
a fail
I was preparing
for the future and in a taller roof but
that just looks wrong and I gotta take
it off and cut it down
I'll take a
couple inches off of it and then just
drop it down to a normal height for a
three tab shingle roof
we'll fix that
I can fix that in the future but you
know from up there it didn't look ugly
but no
I look at it now I go - I just can't stomach
that
