Kitchen & Bathroom Earthbag Addition
Episode 16
Installing Rain Catchment System
Our loving pets decided to help with our new rainwater harvesting system! We finished digging out the trench and the guys got crafty while installing gutters along with the piping between the house and tank. Now we are all prepared for the monsoon rain! We also knocked out the tire, got a start on the cobbing and painted the facia. We hope you have had a wonderful week and we'll see you next Friday.

last week we completed the sheeting on
the roof
stay tuned as we continue on
the kitchen and bathroom additions to
the main house
?
these are the small
little jack rafters they've got to go in
and help support the the roof here
?
so we don't know what will happen when we take the tire
out
but we want to
yeah
one sec
?
pretty good one
?
for the systems of the rainwater
catchment in here
I'm gonna use that
five and a half inch pipe that's in the
hoop barn so I'm gonna pull that out and
use that for my drainage
with the flow
of the rain that we're gonna be getting
off of the two roofs
we decided to go
with a much larger pipe
it's like five
and a quarter - five and a half inch pipe
that'll allow us to get it all in the
big tank
we don't get much rain during
the year but when we get rain it comes
down in buckets
a lot of times with the
system that we have now it just
overflows and we lose a lot of that
water so a big hole there for it to go
into, big pipe for it to flow, to both
halves of the roof, plus Shaes room
we're
gonna get quite a bit of water
?
we're back
here we go
?
woooo
?
wow
is it gonna stay?
we didn't use concrete this time
we used
soil cement and we should have used
concrete
this is kinda crumbly so we just put that
thing up and leave it, we'll be find
okay
but
it looks like we're gonna be able to get
away with it
I don't want to spend a ton
of money on the connectors for these
things because they're real expensive
it's not pressurized system
it's not for sewer or anything like that
it's just rainwater so I'm gonna make my own
connector
I have one connection I
know I gotta make
that's from Shae's room over to the mainline coming off the
house and that's gonna have to be some
kind of Y connector so I'm going to be
making that and using fiberglass to be able to connect it all together
that's exactly where we want you to dig
?
since it was Diesel sized it probably is perfect
?
just the middle of where he is at is good
it just needs to be close enough
this is how you break things Bree
you don't use them properly
String 1 - Bree 0
String 2
Bree 1
go to the top of the tank
drop it in the tank Bree
these men
why
String 3 - Bree 2
literally drop it in
no, she's joking
?
oh no no no no
String 4 - Bree 2
I'm putting together the Y that has to go in
I'll put it in in about a 45 degree and then
we'll do some fancy cutting here to be
able to blend this in here
if it doesn't
work, we're gonna put wings on it and
make a plane out of it
you can't really
do this without being a visual thing so
it does this
use my table saw
and see if I can't just cut this out
small little sections like this one
and I'll wrap one around here and then
I'll put one back around there
that's
how this is all gonna come together
first time I've ever done this
it takes about 12 to 20 minutes
I figured
after I'm done with that I wanna make
myself a hat or something - you
never know
pointy ears
this ditch is for our rainwater
tank that we had Jeff dig a big hole for
we decided to get started on the
ditch since it rained and easier to dig
in here
it will go from the gutters and into that tank
yep yep yep
I forgot the gloves
we've created
a resin mess as much as we possibly
could and we have this all fiberglassed
and it'll be rock-solid here in just a
little bit
we are so squished in here
we should of brought the truck
25 pieces of gutter
10 foot
we went to the old
hardware store that we normally go to
and we purchased five inch gutters to
replace the old four inch vinyl and we
took the old vinyl ones down, we painted
the fascia and then we started putting
up the new ones
if we dropped a quarter
inch / 10 foot and by the time we got
done with five and only be down an inch
and a quarter from down there and that's
not very far
is this from you Mom?
I dropped paint
goober paint dropper
oh
oooohhhh
Dad, clean your ears out
just cleaned it out right there
let's see what they look like
how does that look Mom?
it looks beautiful
dad is doing something fancy over here with caulking
I've never seen done
before
well then again I've never really
put in a metal gutter before
yes
put in plastic ones
let's try it out see how
she works
attach the first one on first
then we put the second one on second
logic
I know it's dizzying isn't it?
?
yikes
should we try this one again
?
okay
it's done
there's a storm approaching
you get
out
he was staring at you
it was so cute
you guys are cruising
how do you
know you're moving downward
the roof line is
already there
all I'm doing is moving it down every
10-foot, 1/4 of an inch
?
we won't be using
that anymore
I finally got it down so
things are working out the way they
should
as before it was a little bit of
learning curve like everything
?
yeah so what happened
when we had this for our water tank
the bottom of it all got rusted out so
we're just gonna put some bentonite clay
and that will seal the bottom
the sides
didn't leak
it was just the bottom so
that's what we're gonna do
bentonite clay is used in the bottom of
ponds to seal them and it works really
well surprisingly
we're getting the rest of the gutter up here on the top of the roof
our new section of roof we put in
we're gonna be using steel but I'm faced
with this really complicated corner for
22 and 1/2 degree turn like this
it's
going to be fun
so here's what we do
we do this
we stick it in the hole
like that
bend it around
?
a complicated deal here
there is clay in this bucket
woven this
mesh onto this drum head
goes on there
like that to act as a filter so now we
have a nice filter to filter out all
that many Leafs and mesquite beans that
will fall through
imagine if mosquitoes
could get in here
talk about a breeding ground
?
still kinda working on it
here
they don't make corners like this
because who would put on it on a building
like this
?
last corner
I've got it down now
to a
small science
this one goes to this one
and then that one wraps around this one
and then this one flips over and does
that 180 and then after I did 180 I do a
360 because then you're all set up to
dismount and ready
?
I thought I would get started
a little bit on the stucco-ing over here
because it's gonna take a while the stucco
but I got this big gap to fill
there was some cob mixture in a bucket in the
back of the house
I'm gonna fill in with that and then we'll stucco
over the top of that
smart idea
?
so where's our
downspout?
get down off a duck
the joke is,
how do you get down from an elephant
you don't, you get down from a duck
I like it
you've got this to fit in there
really nice
look at that downspout
that's
bigger than the other ones huh?
yeah
we like to use this irrigation pipe
because it's cheaper than like the PVC pipe
if you have this big gutter and this
gutters full of water then you need just
as big of an exit if not bigger because
you've got a ton more that's coming in
twice the amount now
as long as we paint them
they won't deteriorate in the sun
isn't it a bummer we don't it hooked up?
it would be filling up right now Gar
maybe tomorrow
?
our neighbor, Lisa, has dropped off some
paint for us
it works really great for our
eaves
I feel like there's an eve joke in there somewhere - an eve pun in there
but I can't find it
anyway, thank you so
much Lisa for dropping the paint off
mucho appreciated
thankfully it's just
different enough that we can tell where
we've painted and where we haven't
painted
?
it's dad's idea and I like it
these are going
to open up like this
and slip over the top of the pipes
?
I've split down a piece of pipe and
filled this piece in
and then dad has
some plastic strips they're gonna fit
into this section here and on the
ends
we're going to seal
we're going to pipe glue it on
boom bingo bango
?
if it really gets going
right over the top of
it
true
push it back towards me a little bit
so that if it drips it will drip in
?
we would like to go ahead and backfill
around our big tank here after we get
the tank filled with water
that way we
get equal pressure from the outside and
the inside of the tank
?
we got this tree in celebration of getting in the gray water system since
we'll be able to have water now to water
a tree
this is a Crape Myrtle and if
it gets full sun it can have potential
of six months of blooms and we have a
spot here
what is it? - a trunk from a palm
tree is buried under there
?
so with it being under the ground like this now too
it will keep the mosquitoes down
normally you don't have mosquitoes in
the desert but when you start catching
rainwater, you get mosquitoes
so this will be nice
to have that down there too because with
the courtyard, I want it to be
comfortable - I want people to come over
and enjoy and
not be
carried away by mosquitoes
a good system and a permanent system now
instead of the hodgepodge one that we
got going
more water, water flows faster,
no mosquitoes, and it's all hidden
- it'll be underground
yeah, I'm gonna
love that
it's gonna be great
look at that filter Gary
yeah
I wonder how much water's in
there
?
Wow it's working Gar
behind us here is
our system and it is the system
of rainwater that's coming down
we still
have yet to do the gray water system so
we're gonna leave this open for a little
bit until I get that other pipe run in
and I guess that wraps up this week's
video
thank you so much for being here
