Shae’s Earthbag Bedroom
Episode 7
Building the Heart Walls
Lots of little things happened this week around the homestead! Dad worked some more on my center post and we gave it a name. Mama gave Garen's room a refresh with some stain and got a little carried away! Join us and please enjoy!

last episode we laid the upper-level
foundation and connected the heart of
Shae's earthbag bedroom
[music]
our dog Monday
keeps getting stuck in the lower level
so dad has an idea
[music]
hang on
I'll be there
[music]
come on!
old man
it would just be perfect if you got out right now Monday
I can't believe you're
putting those ugly steps in there
come on
you can do it Monday we believe in you
[music]
nice dad
[music]
come on Buddy
[music]
they're called steps
come on. come on. up
[music]
He's not going to use them now?
up up up!
Yeah Monday. You did it!
good boy!
[music]
Shae and I
we headed over to the hoop
barn to see what windows were available
over there
candy jars
so we're going to use
those two aren't we Shae?
yeah
going to get them cleaned up
those definitely going to work
I've always thought it would be cool to put
something in the little jars
probably
start thinking about putting them in the wall
right now
the buildings go up so fast
it's easy to forget what needs to be put
in
as you can see
the artists room
yeah
you know I won't forget when I get to
that point
you get in the moment and
it's easy to forget
it becomes kind of
day in day out work and you don't really
think about it anymore
suddenly you're 2 layers above the layer
you wanted to put your windows on so
it's nice to kind of map things out now
so that we know where everything is
going to go
so we have this circular
glass pane
taking this tire and using it
to frame it
and then we'll fill it with
like some sort of foam to keep it still
it will be a tire frame window
and then
we'll put that in somewhere in the wall
there's windows
hangers
we're going to
do some bottle lights
I'm going to have a
shelving thing
hold on for a second
here mom
yours is going to have
probably more in the walls than any of the
other buildings
it's really important to keep an eye on
where we're at level-wise
you started writing on the building which is a really good idea
to remind us
so I'm thinking I don't
want my knick-knack jars in here
I want them by my bed
[music]
Before we start the day we usually cut our
bags to length
oh sorry max
I'm fine I'll
move whatever
throw it behind the dog. Oops
wind curse you. no. [laughter]
lay the barbed wire
and then start
[music]
What are you doing Gary?
digging our trench for our 30 amp
service to the music studio
we've been
running temporary power from the house
to the studio so Shae can live in it
the
building is really close to the solar
panel setup that we have but we can't
really afford setting all that up so we
have to dig a 200-foot trench to our box
in order to get power to this thing
all right
I'm tired
we've been waiting for the rains before we dig that ditch
the easy part
and now it's completed
[music]
so Garen's installing it for us and
we're getting ready to move downstairs
into the studio
[music]
Garen's room
we have the paper bag on the outside which
obviously is not meant to last for a
long time
unfortunately I ran out of my
stain because I knocked it all over on the
side of my head
I have the stain in my hand and it flicked up
it lands on
the side of my head and I couldn't
really see it right away
just kind of
brushed it off
I was noticing that my
ear was starting to ache
and I had got that doggone stain down in my ear canal
and I just couldn't work anymore
the pain was too much and I had to go in and
wash it out with soap and water and put
peroxide on it and lay on it
took me out for about a half a day
you see what it looked like before and
this is what happens
especially to the bottom of building
so I come back
through and cob it
it's kind of deteriorated so we just go ahead
and cob it in the places that break out
and restain over the top of
all of it
obviously paper bags is
probably not the most long-lasting
exterior that we could have done on this
building but
it was fun and we we wanted to try it
do something new
[music]
nice
still quite a bit of work doing some sanding
and taking down all these rough edges
for the most I think I've
got it shaped the way I want it shaped
we have officially named my center post the
bald monster
looks like that shaved, bald
monster from Monsters Inc
oh goodness
that's the amount that he shaved
you'd think that the pole would be smaller
I'm going to make another hugelkultur
it will be perfect
just keep piling
in on mom
it'll work
dad just has a
little bit more sanding to do on this
and we should probably be able to get that in
next week
isn't anyone letting you out?
[music]
I'm going to go milk the goat
[music]
very hungry goaties
come here
we have this whole idea of living out in
the country and everything and there's
white lightning out there
well we have a white goats milk so
it's really good stuff
and it's a great benefit to the family
and saves us lots of money
so not only
we have the health benefits of raw milk
we've also got the savings of not having
to pay a few bucks a gallon
she's my favorite
I pick favorites
we always put the baby goats
in
lock them up at night
so as your milk we can milk in the morning
and then we let them out
with their mamas after we're done milking
go see your mama
[music]
can turkey and chickens?
I don't think they can
that chick looks a lot like mama turkey
look at the markings.
they are the same as the turkey
that looks very
strange
[music]
one of the things we told the
kids was whoever got the first
which of
course the oldest, Bree got the first
building
the benefit is is she gets the
building first
but the benefits of the
last
being Shae
is that she will then
get, hopefully, the best building because
we've learned from all the other
buildings
when I was designing this one
I had a lot of time
I got to experience
everyone's building
seeing what they
like what they don't like and
originally
I wanted to design much like Bryson's
but with instead of his drop-down
being a couple feet
it would be more of
a drop down
the Bryson dictionary
words to communicate
that are not gramable
gramable?
the new Engrish
language
so there's like more space but
it doesn't have this open feel
which is
good
I think it's good because he has
a workspace and a sleep space
which is nice to have that separation
but I really like the feel of Bree's and
Garen's room because it's all one room
so I kind of combined what I liked about
all the buildings into mine
I should plant Mesquite trees in the wall and
water the walls
no
I'm asking the Youtubee
yeah that's the real boss
the real boss of
this channel
the viewer
that's true
the bags come out in the front of both Bree's and Garen's
on the entryway
the flatter look
it gives a more
just a better look
I did really want
a deck on but I think we're done with wood
doesn't really do well in
the desert
it's one of the things that
deteriorate fast
Gary saw someone on YouTube using a
board
which is a good idea
you can do
decking out of flag stone or brick or
there's other ways to do decking
we'll come up with something
[music]

[singing]
